Shelly Madruga
Shelly Madruga is known for her large-scale abstract paintings, full of sweeping movement, tonal layering, and confident mark-making. Based in her hometown of San Diego, she creates each piece with a striking blend of intuition and control—often trading in traditional brushes for a carpenter’s trowel, a nod to her roots as the daughter of a builder. The result is work that feels both physical and deeply felt, full of energy and texture.
Before turning to painting full-time, Shelly spent over twenty years in graphic design, working at an internationally recognized advertising agency. Her background in color theory still plays a central role in her creative process today. What began as abstract portraiture evolved into moody, minimalist landscapes—and now, into dynamic, gestural abstractions layered with light, shadow, and emotion.
At the heart of Shelly’s work is a desire to translate feeling into form. Her paintings often sit in the space between calm and urgency, stillness and movement. They’re not meant to depict anything specific, but to evoke something personal and familiar—an emotional resonance that lingers just beneath the surface.
